install_desktop Installation · No license fees & open source

Run Klacks yourself — on your own infrastructure.

Three paths, one result: the Windows package for your office PC, the guided installer for your server, or the Docker Compose stack for your own setup — no registration, no licence fees. On the office PC you choose your country during installation; for the server and Docker Compose, the country package ships with your country's public holidays, working-time rules and industry presets (surcharges where defined for the country).

info
There is no preconfigured country package for this country yet. You can still install Klacks in full: the standard package contains everything except the country presets. You then set up public holidays, working-time rules and surcharges in the app.

On your office PC (no Docker)

For businesses with a single office PC: an installer for Windows — no Docker and no server of your own. The database, Klacks and the update service run as Windows background services, updates arrive automatically, and your data stays on this PC.

Requirements
  • check_circle Windows 11 (64-bit)
  • check_circle Also runs on Windows 10 22H2 (64-bit). Microsoft no longer provides regular support for Windows 10; security updates are only available through the paid ESU program.
  • check_circle Klacks is used directly on this PC — access from other devices on the network is not provided yet
  • check_circle Internet connection on first start (AI models, about 700 MB) and for updates
  • check_circle Administrator rights for the installation
In three steps
  1. 1
Download the installer Click “Download for Windows”. The file “Klacks-Setup-win-x64.exe” usually ends up in your “Downloads” folder.
  2. 2
Double-click and choose your country Double-click the file. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, click “More info” and then “Run anyway” — the installer is not digitally signed yet. Confirm the administrator prompt that follows with “Yes”. In the wizard, choose your country (public holidays, time zone, working-time rules) and, if you like, a desktop shortcut. The wizard shows its progress; the installation takes a few minutes.
  3. 3
Open Klacks and sign in At the end, leave “Open Klacks in the browser” ticked and click “Finish”. Later you will find Klacks in the Start menu under “Klacks” (or at http://localhost:5180 in your browser). Sign in with the initial account the wizard shows at the end and create your own administrator account. If Klacks is still starting, wait a few minutes — the first start takes a little longer.

For 64-bit Windows (x64). On Windows 11 devices with an ARM processor (e.g. Snapdragon X) Klacks runs through emulation; Windows 10 on ARM is not supported.

For Mac: coming soon.

Linux? See below: Klacks on a Linux PC.

Uninstalling: Klacks can be removed like any other Windows program — open Settings › Apps, find the “Klacks” entry and choose “Uninstall”. The uninstaller asks whether the database, settings and backups should be deleted as well. If you answer “No”, your data stays in C:\ProgramData\Klacks and a later reinstallation picks it up again.

Guided installer

The guided path for your own server: an install script generates secrets and a self-signed certificate, pulls the latest released version and brings up the whole stack — on Linux or Windows.

Requirements
  • check_circle Docker Desktop (Windows) or Docker Engine with the Compose plugin (Linux)
  • check_circle Outbound access to ghcr.io and github.com (images and updates)
  • check_circle Free ports 80 and 443 (configurable)
Three steps
  1. 1
Download and extract Download the ZIP for your country and extract it on the target machine.
  2. 2
Run the install script Run the bundled shell script on Linux, or the PowerShell script on Windows. It generates secrets and the certificate, applies the country profile and waits until the stack is healthy.
  3. 3
Log in and change the password Log in from your browser and immediately change the initial password listed in the bundled README.

Docker Compose

The direct path for teams that manage their own container stacks: docker-compose.yml, nginx configuration, init scripts, the country profile and a prepared .env template with every variable — you keep full control.

Requirements
  • check_circle Docker Engine with the Compose plugin (or Docker Desktop)
  • check_circle Outbound access to ghcr.io and github.com (images and updates)
  • check_circle Experience running Docker Compose stacks
Three steps
  1. 1
Download and extract Download the Compose ZIP for your country and extract it — the bundled README walks through every step.
  2. 2
Set up .env Copy the .env.example template to .env and set the server name plus passwords/secrets. The path to the country profile is already prefilled.
  3. 3
Start the stack Run “docker compose up -d”, log in from your browser and change the initial password immediately.

There is no separate Compose package for this country yet — the standard package contains the complete Docker Compose stack.

terminal

On a Linux PC

The simple way for a Linux PC, no prior knowledge needed: download the package, enter one command in the terminal once — the installer does the rest. Klacks then runs with Docker on this PC, updates arrive automatically, and your data stays on this PC.

Requirements
  • check_circle 64-bit Linux with a desktop: Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora. Other distributions (e.g. Linux Mint) are not officially supported — there, please install Docker yourself first.
  • check_circle 16 GB of memory recommended, because the browser and desktop run alongside. Below about 8 GB the installer stops.
  • check_circle Internet connection on first start and for updates
  • check_circle The administrator password (sudo password) of this PC
In three steps
  1. 1
Download the package and extract it into a permanent folder Download the ZIP file and extract it into a folder that stays where it is, e.g. a folder “klacks” in your home folder — not in the “Downloads” folder. The automatic updates work with this folder; if it is deleted, updates stop working.
  2. 2
Open a terminal and enter the command In the folder with the extracted installation files, right-click and choose “Open in Terminal”, enter the command below and confirm with your password (it is not shown while you type). If Docker is missing, the installer offers to install it: answer “y” — this takes a few minutes. You only need the terminal this once for the installation; if you run the installer again later (e.g. for a repair), use this same command including sudo.sudo bash install.sh
  3. 3
Open in the browser and sign in Open https://localhost in your browser. The browser warns about the certificate — confirm the warning (“Advanced” and then “Proceed” or “Accept the risk”). Sign in with the initial account from the README in the folder and change the password immediately.
lock

About the certificate warning: during installation Klacks creates its own certificate, which your browser does not know — hence the warning. The connection is still encrypted.

Good to know

code

Open source (AGPL-3.0)

The complete source code is public on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 — no licence fees, no vendor lock-in.

storage

Data stored on your servers

Klacks runs on your infrastructure. Staff and scheduling data are stored on your server — there is no forced cloud. Only if you choose an external AI provider are requests sent to it; with a local model, no AI request goes to an external provider.

update

Updates

An update service applies newly released versions automatically — with Docker as a service inside the stack, on the office PC as a Windows background service.

lock

HTTPS with Docker

The installer generates a self-signed certificate to get you started — you can switch to your own certificate at any time. Change the initial password right after the first login. The Windows package for the office PC runs without a certificate at http://localhost:5180.

Try first, install later?

The Playground lets you test Klacks right in the browser with sample data — no installation, no registration. Or take a look at the source code on GitHub.
